A paradigm shift in architectural assembly is occurring: the language of assembly is changing from “construction” to “fabrication”. This term has been used predominantly in the fields of product design, or industrial design, and has a general association with the prototype and prototyping. This shift is due to a digitizing of the entire design process, from conception to fabrication.
What this means for the architect, is that they now have the means to have construction process in-house, rather than outsourcing the process to vocational trades (carpenters, masons, welders, etc.), in essence, removing the middle-man between designer and user.
The ambitions of my thesis project are to (1) intensify this interaction between architect and user by establishing a direct dialogue between the designed assemblage and the end user(s); (2) empower the user to directly engage in the manipulation of the architecture (and the subsequent spaces,) to create and recreate according to personal disposition; (3) develop true dynamicism in architectural space and tectonics; (4) redefine the role of the architect in a world of instant (accessibility, knowledge, gratification).
